The Charlottetown Sleighing Club was one of the first organized sporting events in Charlottetown.  Sir Charles Fitzroy, the Lieutenant Governor and his club first started to meet in the 1840s on Queen Square where handsome sleighs and horses carried the social elite of the day through the streets of Charlottetown.  Some of the City’s working class resented this weekly display and began to organize their own sleighing events under the banner of the Opposition Club. Sometimes, the groups would almost collide in the streets and confrontations were the result.
