Reverend John Goodwill was a Church of Scotland Minister who, although a native of Ashdale Nova Scotia, served for many years in this province. Ordained in 1864, five years later, he and his wife, Euphemia Jane Cooper (1848-1930), traveled as missionaries to the New Hebrides for five years. They then spent time in Australia, New Zealand and Tasmania. It was an adventurous life. A memorial window commemorates their contribution in St. James Church.
When the couple returned home in 1875, they settled at Orwell Head, where Rev. Goodwill succeeded the Reverend Donald MacDonald. Not long after, the family moved to Brighton in 1887 and would remain there for the rest of their lives. The couple had six children including: Dr. Victor Lyall, Thomas William, Edward Lional, George E. A., C. Elizabeth, and adopted daughter, Mary Foster.
