The patriotic business owners on Queen Street between Richmond and Grafton Street decked out their buildings with flags to celebrate the end to the siege of Ladysmith during the Anglo Boer War. Many of the upper stories of these buildings are still recognizable today, although most have been altered due to fire and demolition. Due to its close proximity to Queen Square and the busy Charlottetown Market, this commercial area developed early.
