Although the gentleman pictured on his bicycle in the foreground may be taking a leisurely ride and wound up amidst the VE Day Parade, cyclists were used extensively in wartime. In WWI they were used in scouting, communication, transporting materials and combat. They were also utilised in WWII, notably during the D-Day invasion of Normandy. Images have survived that show soldiers taking bicycles ashore. Others exhibit how the paratroopers used collapsible bicycles that they would unfurl once safely on the ground.
