It took a long time before the horse was completely replaced by the automobile in Prince Edward Island. People did not give up on their horses easily, particularly on Prince Edward Island. When the presence of the automobile on Island roads was made legal in 1919, horses were still being used for transport and farming. This would change gradually throughout the next decades until 1961, when reportedly, the tractors had outnumbered teams of horses on Island farms.
