The day before Valentine’s Day 1924 was a fine one. A perfect winter day for an election. Perhaps this is why voter turnout was high. Former mayor, PS Brown was attempting to garner another term at the City’s helm but grocer, John McKenna ultimately won the day and would continue to serve for the next two years. Election dates varied throughout the years in the City. In the beginning, elections were held in August and then moved to February. Currently, municipal voters go to the polls the first Monday in November. Terms for the mayor and city council have also changed. What began as a two year maximum term, was later extended to four years. Interestingly, the City’s longest serving mayor is outgoing Mayor Clifford Lee, who served for no less than 15 years!
